Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation
A thorough, unhurried first visit to understand your symptoms, history and goals, ending with a clear diagnosis and a personalized plan to help you feel better.

What is a psychiatric evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is an in-depth assessment of your mental health carried out by a psychiatric provider. It is the foundation of good care: before any treatment is recommended, your provider takes time to understand what you’re experiencing, how long it has been going on, and how it affects your daily life.
During the evaluation we review your current symptoms, mental health and medical history, family history, medications and supplements, sleep, substance use, relationships, work or school, and the goals that matter most to you. Standardized screening questionnaires may be used to measure symptoms like depression, anxiety or attention difficulties.
By the end of your visit you will have a clear explanation of what may be going on, a working diagnosis where appropriate, and a personalized treatment plan, which may include medication, therapy referrals, lifestyle changes or further testing.
Who should get a psychiatric evaluation?
An evaluation is helpful for anyone who wants clarity about their mental health, whether symptoms are new, long-standing or simply hard to explain.
Struggling with mood
Persistent sadness, irritability, mood swings or loss of interest that won’t lift.
Living with worry or panic
Constant worry, panic attacks, or fears that limit what you do.
Trouble focusing
Ongoing difficulty with attention, organization or finishing tasks.
Sleep problems
Insomnia or poor sleep that affects your mood and energy.
Seeking a diagnosis
You want to understand what is going on and what your options are.
Starting or changing medication
You want an expert opinion before beginning or adjusting treatment.
When should you schedule an evaluation?
It’s time to book when symptoms last more than a couple of weeks or begin to interfere with your life.
- Symptoms have lasted two weeks or longer
- Work, school or relationships are being affected
- You feel overwhelmed, stuck or unlike yourself
- Self-help strategies haven’t brought enough relief
- A doctor, therapist or loved one has suggested it
- You want to explore whether medication could help

Why a thorough evaluation matters
Many mental health conditions share symptoms. Poor concentration can come from ADHD, depression, anxiety or lack of sleep, and each needs a different approach. A careful evaluation helps make sure you get the right diagnosis and the right treatment the first time.
- Accurate diagnosis based on your full history
- Treatment matched to your needs and preferences
- Screening for conditions that often occur together
- A clear plan you understand and agree with
- A trusted starting point for ongoing care

Psychiatric Evaluation: frequently asked questions
How long does a psychiatric evaluation take?
An initial evaluation is longer than a regular visit so your provider has time to understand your full history. We will confirm the expected length when you book.
How much does a psychiatric evaluation cost?
The self-pay rate for an initial psychiatric evaluation is $150. If you are using insurance, we will verify your benefits and explain any copay before your visit.
Do you accept insurance for evaluations?
Yes. We accept both insurance and self-pay patients. Share your insurance details when booking so we can verify your coverage.
What should I bring to my evaluation?
Bring a photo ID, your insurance card if using insurance, a list of current medications and supplements, and any previous mental health records or diagnoses.
Will I get a diagnosis at my first visit?
Often, yes. Your provider will share a working diagnosis when there is enough information. Sometimes additional visits, screenings or records are needed to confirm it.
Will I be prescribed medication right away?
Only if it is appropriate and you agree. Medication is one option among several, and your provider will discuss benefits, risks and alternatives with you.
Can I have my evaluation by telehealth?
Yes. Many evaluations can be completed by secure video. Your provider will let you know if an in-person visit is recommended.
Is my information kept confidential?
Yes. Your health information is protected under HIPAA and shared only as permitted by law or with your consent.
Do I need a referral for an evaluation?
Most patients do not need a referral. Some insurance plans require one, and we will let you know if yours does.
What happens after my evaluation?
You will leave with a personalized treatment plan. Most patients schedule follow-up appointments to start treatment and track progress.
