What

What is psychiatric medication management?

Medication management is the ongoing process of starting, monitoring and adjusting psychiatric medications. It goes far beyond writing a prescription. Your provider chooses medication based on your diagnosis, health history, other medications and personal preferences, then follows up regularly to see how you are responding.

At each visit we review your symptoms, side effects, sleep, mood and daily functioning. If something isn’t working, we adjust the dose, change the timing, switch medications or add supportive treatments. When appropriate, we also discuss safely reducing or stopping medication.

Medication management is used for depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, schizophrenia, insomnia and many other conditions.

Who

Who benefits from medication management?

Anyone taking, or considering, psychiatric medication can benefit from expert monitoring.

New to medication

You and your provider have decided to start medication and want careful guidance.

Not seeing results

Your current medication isn’t helping enough or stopped working.

Bothered by side effects

You are experiencing side effects that affect your quality of life.

Managing complex conditions

You have bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or several conditions at once.

Taking multiple medications

You need someone to review interactions and simplify your regimen.

Staying well long-term

You are stable and want regular check-ins to stay that way.

When

When should you see us about medication?

Reach out whenever your medication isn’t meeting your needs or your situation changes.

  • You are starting a new psychiatric medication
  • Symptoms are returning or not improving
  • Side effects are hard to tolerate
  • You’re pregnant, planning pregnancy or have new health conditions
  • You want to reduce or stop a medication safely

Why

Why regular medication management matters

Finding the right medication can take time. Everyone responds differently, and the first choice is not always the best fit. Regular follow-up helps catch side effects early, fine-tune doses and keep your treatment safe and effective.

  • Evidence-based prescribing tailored to you
  • Close monitoring for side effects and interactions
  • Adjustments based on how you actually feel
  • Coordination with your primary care provider when needed
  • Clear explanations so you understand every change
How

How medication management works

A simple, collaborative process from your first prescription onward.

Start with an evaluation

Choose together

Begin and monitor

Medication is started at an appropriate dose, with follow-ups scheduled to check your response.

Doses or medications are fine-tuned based on your symptoms and side effects.

Maintain your progress

Once you are stable, visits are spaced out to keep you well over the long term.

FAQs

Medication Management: frequently asked questions

How often are medication management appointments?

Visits are usually more frequent when starting or changing medication and less frequent once you are stable. Your provider will recommend a schedule that fits your needs.

How much does a follow-up visit cost?

The self-pay rate for a follow-up appointment is $100. If you use insurance, we will verify your coverage before your visit.

Can medication management be done by telehealth?

Yes. Many follow-up visits are completed by secure video, which makes it easier to stay consistent with care.

How long does it take for psychiatric medication to work?

It depends on the medication. Some work within days, while many antidepressants take several weeks for full effect. Your provider will explain what to expect.

What if I have side effects?

Contact us. Many side effects improve over time or with a dose adjustment, timing change or a different medication.

Can you take over my prescriptions from another provider?

Yes. We start with an evaluation to review your history and current medications, then continue or adjust your treatment as appropriate.

Do you prescribe controlled medications?

Some conditions, like ADHD, may be treated with controlled medications when clinically appropriate and permitted by law. These require careful evaluation and monitoring.

Will I need medication forever?

Not necessarily. Some people take medication short-term, others long-term. Your provider will review this with you regularly.

Can I stop my medication if I feel better?

Please talk to your provider first. Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal effects or a return of symptoms; a gradual plan is usually safer.

Is medication my only option?

No. Medication is often combined with therapy, lifestyle changes and other supports. Your treatment plan is built around your preferences.
